Response to Eshman's "Don't Cry, Mr. President"

Reacting to the Newtown Connecticut massacre, Eshman correctly pointed out that guns alone are not the problem. Mayor Michael Bloomberg epitomized this uninformed, dangerous gun-control hysteria by indicting some “epidemic of gun violence” in America.
Moreover, Eshman respectfully shared outrage because President Obama shed tears, yet we need an executive who delivers “action”. However, after four years of Obama ignoring opposition to the Affordable Care Act and repeatedly refusing to meet with Congressional leaders to compromise and cut deals on taxes and spending, no one should be surprised that the President offers very little beyond tears to shed.
Finally, one element remains missing from Eshman’s proposed speech and the “gun violence” debate. For all the laws, regulations, and good intentions of our leaders, there is no changing the human heart. In this fallen world full of fallen people, we must accept this sobering truth: “The heart is wicked above all things. Who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17: 9).
NRA President Wayne LaPierre declared “tear free”: “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” LaPierre is right. No President can end gun violence, but we can act decisively to diminish it.
